Beliefs & Values

Beliefs

Many of the Costa Rican are predominately of the Catholic faith. Even those who aren't religious still wear religous memorabilia. Even though the more popular faith is Catholicism, it still coexists with spells, spirits, and other supernatural beliefs.  Just over 3/4 th of the population is Catholic and the rest consist mainly of Evangelico Christians, among other religions.

One on the eve of August the 2nd Costa Rica celebraters their national patron saint, Out Lady of Angels. Pilgrims hike to the Basilica of Our Lady of Los Angeles. In addition smaller parishes celebrate other patron saints on their feast day.

Generally after death, Costa Rican bury their dead, hold vigils, pray the rosary, and conduct a burial service.

Social Class
In Costa Rica, the whiter the skin, the more "elite" you are. Most of Costa Rica's upper class consists of Spanish Conquistadors who settled during Colonial times. Also, the last names of Fernandez or Gonzalez are given a higher class because they are descendant from a wealthier family.

The social class is not "set in stone" and there is quite a large middle class. The social class is also very into being fashionable, often wearing name brand clothes, in addition to owning flat screens, ipods, cell phones and can be seen with the most modern technology available. Although brand items are considered a luxury and can often cost a whole month's salary.
Values

My interview Yuly, mentioned that Costa Ricans are accepting of all people and willing to help people with "arms wide open", as well as give to the needy, and willing to go the extra mile to help someone in need.

In Costa Rica there are many multigenerational families, including the great grandparents, grandparents, so on and so forth.

Children in Costa Rica are highly regarded and strangers are almost always willing to assist in calming a crying baby any way they can. Strangers also help carrying the child when they see the mother is struggling.
